What are the steps to take if there's a power outage?

Power outages are frustrating, especially in busy households that rely heavily on power for comfort and safety. The British weather can cause havoc during winter, including causing power outages, often a negative impact caused by ice and snow. Whether your home experiences power outages caused by the weather, or it is caused by your homes electrical systems, you should always be prepared.

At DKP Electrics, we have put some practical tips together to help you in the event of a power outage. We always recommend having a plan in place:

Find the Cause

The first step is to find out what has caused the power outage in the first place. This could be due to bad weather and your entire neighbourhood is effected, or it could be your child's rabbit got loose and has chewed through wiring in the home. Our tips in finding the cause includes:

  • Check your electrical panel for tripped switches
  • Contact your neighbours to see if they also have a power outage and if anyone has contacted your electrical company

Use Battery Powered Lamps and Torches

When faced with a power outage, we always recommend you use a battery powered lamp or a torch, rather than candles, which can be a fire hazard:

  • Use your torch efficiently, turn it off when not using it
  • If you only have candles, using them with care, avoiding placing them near furniture or curtains

Unplug Appliances

When the power goes off, you never expect it. This means you may have had your computer and television on, your air fryer may have been cooking your evening meal. It is important to turn off all your appliances before the power is restored:

  • Unplug all appliances from the power to reduce the risk of overloads and surges when the power is restored
  • Turn down the thermostat
  • Leave one light on so you know once power is back up and running

Efficiently Use Your Fridge

When the power goes off, your fridge isn't getting the power it needs to maintain temperature, putting your perishables at risk. In order to avoid them being spoiled, you will want to:

  • Keep the fridge and freezer doors closed. Fridges can retain their cooling for around four hours without power, while freezers can maintain temperature for up to forty eight hours
  • Only open the fridge or freezer when absolutely necessary
  • Eat all perishable foods first
  • Transfer items from the fridge to freezer, preserving them for longer

Stay Warm

Should the power outage occur during winter, you are going to get cold quickly when your heating isn't working. Wear thick sweaters and use blankets to keep you and your family warm as you wait for the power to be restored.

Do not be tempted to use charcoal or your oven as a source of heat, as this increases the risk of fire, while increasing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Conclusion

Follow the above steps in the event of a power outage to keep you and your family comfortable and safe. If you find the power outage is caused by damage or a surge in your home's electrical system, contact DKP Electrics immediately. The DKP Electrics team are passionate in providing our clients safe, offering a complete electrical service you can trust.
