What are the risks of DIY electrical work?

DIY projects offer an opportunity to improve your home's value, while saving money. But there is one time when DIY is not the right way forward, that is when it comes to electrics. One of the biggest dangerous associated with DIY electrical work is that electricity can be fatal when handled incorrectly.

Electrical fires are a common cause of property damage in the United Kingdom. In 2020, the UK Government announced that there is close to 19,500 accidental fires caused by electricity each year. At the same time, electrical issues result in approximately seventy deaths and three hundred and fifty thousand injuries in homes annually.

What are the Risks of DIY Electrical Work?

We have put a list together of some of the risks associated with DIY electrical work:

Electrocution

If you are not a qualified electrician, then you can easily make a mistake when working with electricity. A minor shock is considered lucky, but electrocution can result in internal injuries and deep burns. A high voltage shock can cause nerve damage, affecting your heart and lungs, which can be fatal.

Electrical Fire

A simple mistake can cause an electrical fire. Electrical fires are considered very dangerous. They are not the same as a regular fire, you cannot use water to extinguish them. If you do throw water on an electrical fire, you increase the risk of serious electrocution.

Common causes of electrical fires include:

  • Incorrect use of electrical wiring – not all wiring is the same, as a result, you cannot use any wire for your electrical system
  • Wrong bulb wattage – you may think that replacing a light bulb is simple, but did you know the wrong wattage can cause an electrical fire?
  • Faulty installations – if you are not qualified as an electrician, you may not realise how dangerous a faulty installation of an outlet or switch can be. Mistakes in these installations lead to short circuits and electrical fires

Code Violations

Any electrical work carried out in your home or business needs to meet electrical regulations. These regulations have evolved, ensuring all electrical installations are safe and efficient. Non compliance when it comes to UK electrical regulations has serious consequences. Businesses and individuals that do not adhere to the standards can face heavy fines, or in extreme cases, imprisonment.

Expensive Repairs

While you want to carry out your electrical work yourself to save yourself money, it could back fire. Even if you avoid an electrical fire when doing DIY electrical work, connecting your wiring incorrectly can cause a failure. This means having to call in a professional and qualified electrician to fix what you have done.

It doesn't matter how simple the electrical work may appear, all electrical installations should be handled by a professional electrician. All DKP Electrics electricians are qualified and experienced to provide you with high quality electrical work that you can trust.
