How do I know if my home has enough electrical capacity for modern appliances?

UK homes used to receive 240v electricity supply until a few years ago, when it was reduced to 230v. The reduction enables you to use appliances that require 220v. Other than a city-wide power outage, there are reasons you may be concerned your home doesn't have the electrical capacity to run your modern appliances.

System Overloads

Power system overloads can result in you seeing signs that your home needs more power. This could be your lights not being as bright as they used to be, or if you use an air conditioner during summer, it is not as cold as you expect.

Imbalances

Modern homes have wires connected to the transformer, equalising the load demand. The load isn't always balanced as the system is designed for, therefore you may have more electricity being sent through one line in your electrical wiring, which limits the voltage in your home. If you are unsure or concerned, give the DKP Electrics team a call today.

Wiring

Old wiring is a concern in the UK, especially with the number of older homes across the country. At the same time, rewiring your home may not resolve an under voltage issue. The age and condition of your wiring can impact how much power you have available to run your favourite modern appliances. Poor insulation, corrosion, and dirty connections all play a role in how much power your house has.

Location

If you live in a rural area and are a fair distance from the power plant, then you may receive a lower voltage of power. Urban homes tend to have a higher load, due to the higher density.

What is Low Voltage?

Low voltage is the reduction in electrical current to ninety percent of normal capacity. If this occurs for more than a minute, it impacts your lighting, along with your appliances performance. It is not uncommon for it to cause intermittent power outages. It is possible that low voltage can cause equipment to malfunction or appliances to overheat.

How Do I Know if My Home Has Enough Electrical Capacity?

If you want to add new appliances to your home, you may need to upgrade your electrical panel. Your electrical service is how much electricity can flow from the grid into your home at any given time. Modern homes tend to have two hundred amps, where an older home may have one hundred amps, maybe less. If your home has less than two hundred amps, you may not have enough power to install your new modern appliances.

Electrical panels comprise of circuit breakers. These are responsible for the safe control of electrical power to various appliances and sections within your home. There are numerous solutions that we can assist you wish, all of which do require you use the services of an experienced and qualified electrician.

Conclusion

In most cases you can take a look at the electricity box located outside your home. Some will have the amps coming into the home clearly marked on the inside of the door. Unfortunately this is not always the case. If you are worried that you live in an older home and you want to add new appliances, call in the DKP Electrics team and let us check your electricity capacity, ensuring you can enjoy those new appliances with confidence.
