How can I identify if my circuit breaker needs replacement?

The circuit breaker in your home can last for decades when it is properly maintained and installed. If you see any signs that your circuit breaker is not working properly, or you own an older home, you may need a circuit breaker replacement.

Have you been experiencing problems with your circuit breaker? If so, there are a number of causes, not all of them require a complete replacement. If you are unsure, call the DKP Electrics team at any time and one of our expert electricians can come to your home to carry out an inspection, identifying any problems before they become serious.

Circuit Breaker is Tripping

One of the first signs there is something wrong with your circuit breaker is when it trips constantly. You may notice you cannot run your toaster and coffee machine at the same time.

Some home owners find their circuit breaker trips when they have more than one appliance plugged in at any given time. Most people will turn the circuit breaker on and off to try and fix the problem, though this is only a temporary solution. If it continues tripped, it can result in an electrical fire. If your breaker keeps tripping, it's advisable to call in the professionals.

Your System Still Uses Electrical Fuses

In 2002, fuse boxes were replaced with circuit breakers in the United Kingdom. If your system is still running on fuses, now is the time to upgrade to a circuit breaker panel, which is considerably safer. Businesses in the UK can face penalties if they are still using outdated fuse boxes. Contact DKP Electrics for more information.

Outdated Electrical Systems

If you are unsure when your circuit breaker was installed, but you live in an older home, then chances are you need a replacement. Homes that had electrical upgrades before you purchased it, could still have the original panels. Ideally, your electrical panel should be replaced every twenty five years by a trained and qualified electrician.

Incorrect Wiring

Another common problem that shows you need to replace your circuit breaker is the wiring in your home. This number is often displayed at the top of the panel. Older homes are set to sixty amps. If you check your panel and it shows sixty amps, you need a replacement. Sixty amps is not enough for the modern appliances we have today. Ideally you need two hundred amp wiring to ensure the safety and security of your family and home.

Corrosion

If your circuit breaker is showing signs of corrosion, then it is definitely time for a replacement. Corroded circuit breakers increase the risk of a house fire.

You Smell Burning

This is every home owners worst nightmare. If you smell burning, this is a serious concern, and a sign it's time to replace your circuit breaker. It tells you your electrical system is a serious fire hazard.

Warm Electrical Panel

If your circuit breaker panel feels warm to the touch, that is a sign there is a serious issue with the electrical system. If your power outlets also feel warm or hot to the touch, it is a sign to call in a professional and qualified electrician immediately.

Buzzing Noise

Any buzzing sounds coming from the circuit breaker should be a concern and it should be inspected by a qualified electrician without delay. Buzzing is a sign that your circuit breaker is releasing sparks, which can increase the risk of fire.

In Summary

If you are experiencing any of the above concerns with your circuit breaker, then it's time to call in professional electricians to carry out an inspection and make necessary repairs. Not all circuit breaker problems result in replacement. You can call the DKP Electrics team for more information.
