How can I add more electrical outlets to a room?

There are times when you want to spice things up in your home, maybe turning your furniture around to make your living space more functional, the only problem is when you move your flat screen television to a blank wall, you realise there is no outlet, forcing you to rely on an extension cord.

Before we go any further, it is important to know there is a catch to adding more electrical outlets to a room. This catch is the IET Wiring Regulations, also known as BS 7671. It is a national standard in the United Kingdom for the safety of electrical installations. It sets guidelines that electricians must follow when installing or modifying electrical systems. What does this mean? It means that while you can add more electrical outlets yourself, it's not recommended. We recommend using one of our experienced and qualified DKP Electrics electricians to ensure the best end result.

Finding the Power Source

The first step to adding more electrical outlets to a room is finding your power source. Look on the wall behind your new location to determine if the circuit can handle another outlet. Remember to call your DKP Electrics electrician if you are unsure at any time to ensure your outlets are installed safely.

Turning Off the Power

Electricity is dangerous and one wrong move can result in electrocution or an electrical fire, both of which you want to avoid at all costs. Use a voltage tester to ensure that the power to that circuit is turned off.

Laying Out the Outlet

Measure the common reference point on the wall, marking the location of any old outlets and studs. Pick the spot where you want to install your new outlet, keeping it within the same wall cavity.

Cut in New Box

You can use a drywall saw to cut inside the outline of the box. Always cut horizontally first in case there are any obstructions. Do not make the hole too big. The outlet should fit tightly. Test fit the outlet and then remove it again, ensuring it fits accurately.

Preparing the Outlet

You will want to double check the power is off before pulling out the old outlet. Open the cable clamp at the back of the plastic box, pushing one end of the wire through the opening. Strip the exterior covering of the wiring, leaving some sheathing within the box.

Wiring

Splice the bare copper or green wires in the box, attaching them to the outlets green screw. Remember, if you are unsure at any time, call in a licensed, qualified, and experienced electrician.

Once the green wire is attached to the green screw, you can attach the white wire to the silver screw and the black wire to the brass one. Tighten all connections, giving them a gentle tug to ensure they are secure. Wrap electrical tape around the terminals.

Can I install new outlets anywhere in my home?

As mentioned previously, all electrical installations must be carried out by an experienced and qualified electrician. If you decide to go ahead and carry out the work as a DIY project, you will still need an electrician to sign off on the safety of the work.

We recommend giving DKP Electrics a call now and let one of our expert electricians come and assist you in adding more electrical outlets to any room in your home.
